[ENGLISH]
Modern vehicles already have driver assistance features to make driving safer and more comfortable. However, vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists can only benefit from this technology if they can be detected by the vehicle’s sensors. Traffic situations often make this difficult, as other vehicles and urban infrastructure can obstruct the visibility of these road users. This situation is particularly relevant for intersections, the places with the biggest traffic issues. This challenge can be addressed by bringing technologies already validated on vehicles into the infrastructure.
Such solutions involve concepts for increasing intersection safety by detecting traffic participants, fusing and disseminating the information collected by intersection-mounted sensors for real-time safety applications. These concepts involve the use of sensors such as video cameras or radars as well as specific telecommunication techniques. In such a concept, the precision with which the traffic participants are located is vital.
Within the WiS4IASI project – „Wireless System for Intelligent Applications in Safe Intersections” an experimental analysis of wireless communication technologies (5G and UWB) usable for locating traffic participants in an intersection was carried out. Also, technologies for high-precision radio localization of traffic participants in an intersection were demonstrated and a collaborative localization concept was proposed to fuse the information from different sensors (cameras, radio sensors), concept integrated into a specific software application for smart intersections.

Recent studies show that the car of the future will be CASE, i.e. it will incorporate the following features: connected, autonomous, shared, electrified. Modern vehicles already have driver assistance features to make driving safer and more comfortable. However, vulnerable road users (VRU), e.g., pedestrians or cyclists, would benefit from this technology only if they can be detected by vehicle sensors. Often, traffic situations make this difficult. Other vehicles and urban infrastructure may obstruct the visibility of these traffic participants.
It is expected that by 2050, twice as many people will live in cities as compared to today. In this context, individual urban mobility is a desire that raises more and more issues. Vision Zero is a vision of mobility without road accidents. This is particularly relevant for intersections, places with the biggest traffic problems. This challenge can be addressed by bringing in technologies already validated on vehicles in infrastructure.
In this context, Continental Automotive’s initiative is one of the kinds to develop concepts for increasing safety at intersections by detecting traffic participants, merging and disseminating information collected by intersecting sensors for real-time safety applications. These concepts involve the use of radar sensors and specific communication techniques. In such a concept, the accuracy with which the location of the traffic participants takes place is vital. The project aims to combine the concept of intelligent intersection with that of MIMO radar in order to increase the accuracy of the location of the traffic participants. The results will include the experimental and analytical demonstration of these concepts and their crowning will be given by the demonstration of an integrated road safety application at the intelligent intersection.
